The protagonist Max rides the existential waves of a late 20th century Long Island at the edges of New York City influence. As a high school student who has discovered the escapism of marijuana and the mysteries of the other sex, he has found a distraction to wipe away the odd worldview of his parents. The observations and prose describing the era and scenery of suburbia are raw and honest. Max's mother has inherited an aviary of beautiful birds which are falling prey to disease. His father's unemotional approach to dissecting the fallen birds seems an apt metaphor for the loss of innocence in America as the digital age encroaches and slowly erases the romanticism of elder post-war generation and the younger post-Vietnam generation. The subtle tension has the feeling of watching a sleepwalker make their way through the house -- you anxiously wait for china to get knocked off the shelf, but like real life, the dramas are pint sized and only upon reflection do they seem larger. The Accumulator is a funny, tense, suburban bildungsroman. Max Roth--a smart, funny, thoughtful teenager and the focus of the book--has a problem, or several problems, with his parents, his friends, and his habits. Loesberg reveals the full extent of Max's problems over the course of the book, and this is what contributes to the sense of suspense; what seems in the beginning of the book like a tough but recognizable set of situations for Max--parents in discord, both firmly entrenched in their respective positions; romantic drama; a hovering cloud of teenage anxiety--is carefully deepened and made more complex. This is a book full of surprises there's historical pseudoscience, gruff dovecote-wrights, ancient rituals, the pleasures of weed-smoking and -buying, implicit and explicit menace, and the daily emotional volatility of teenage life. It's also consistently funny (especially with the dialogue among the younger characters--these are kids trying to make each other laugh. They're having fun and goofing off). The Accumulator is the kind of book you finish and wonder how it was made. It's a fun, companionable novel, but it's also prickly and bleak in parts, which makes it so good--it's totally its own thing.

I am a biased reviewer, having read an early draft of this novel many years ago, and sharing familial ties with the author. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to more from the author. Support creativity!
I'm glad I got a chance to read this debut novel, at times mysterious and at others mystifying. The milieu and era are finely drawn, and the suspenseful narrative kept me turning the pages. The adolescent narrator is a sympathetic character, his parents compelling ciphers. Anyone who was once a smart, stoned, sexually frustrated kid with smart but messed-up parents will relate to this story, and those who were not will get a vivid taste of that experience.
I was drawn into Max's story, at once fascinated and repelled by his family's loosening grip on sanity. Max was an utterly relatable character, at once insightful and sensitive while also naïve and lost, as most teenagers are. I look forward to reading more from this author!
